This is the Sweet Chili Sauce that I like.

WHAT’S IN AN EGG ROLL?
Traditional egg rolls are often made with ground pork or shrimp. They contain an assortment of vegetables like cabbage, julienned carrots, green onions, mushrooms, and bamboo shoots. After the egg roll mixture is made, spoonfuls are rolled into egg roll wrappers. A beaten egg is generally used to “seal” the wrapper so that it does not fall open during the frying process. And then, yes, the egg rolls are fried in hot, popping oil. I’ve made egg rolls from scratch. It’s time consuming and messy. This recipe for Sweet and Spicy Egg Roll in a Bowl takes some of my favorite flavors and ingredients, but leaves the mess behind.

WHY GROUND BEEF?
While egg rolls are traditionally made from ground pork or shrimp, beef makes a nice substitution. Pork and shrimp egg roll recipes tend to play up the savory or spicy flavors. Beef lends itself to the sweet and spicy variety. While beef is the second most consumed protein in America (behind chicken), it is the third most popular protein in China (behind pork and poultry). Pork may be more commonly found in an egg roll, but it’s not the only option. I encourage you to try beef in your next Egg Roll in a Bowl recipe.

SUGGESTIONS FOR SERVING
You can serve this Sweet and Spicy Egg Roll in a Bowl as is, meaning just the beef and vegetables in the sweet and spicy sauce. This option would be friendly to those who are looking to eat low carb. I’ve also shown this recipe served over rice noodles. That’s another option that seems to please my growing son. I think this would also be nice paired with fried rice. For any family, when you add a side, the main will go farther. That stretches this budget friendly meal even farther.
As always, I hope that you take this recipe and make it your own!

Sweet and Spicy Egg Roll in a Bowl

Ingredients
– Large pan or Dutch oven
– 2 tsp sesame oil
– 1 lb ground beef
– 2 garlic cloves, minced
– 1 small onion, sliced thin
– 1/4 yellow pepper, julienned
– 1 small carrot, julienned
– 1/2 c Ocean’s Halo “No Soy” Sauce (or other soy sauce alternative)
– 2 tbsp sweet red chili sauce
– 1 tbsp sriracha sauce (omit or decrease to reduce heat)
– 1/4 tsp white pepper
– 1 inch fresh grated ginger
– 16 oz pkg cole slaw mix or chopped cabbage
– Chopped green onions for serving
Directions
-
Heat a large pan over medium heat. When the pan is hot, add the sesame oil, ground beef, garlic, onion, and yellow pepper. Chop the beef as it cooks. Stir frequently. When the beef is almost done, add the carrots.
-
Reduce the heat to medium-low. Add the “No Soy” Sauce, sweet red chili paste, and optional sriracha sauce. Stir to combine.Add the white pepper and grated ginger. Then add the cabbage mixture. Stir again.
-
Continue to cook this mixture until it reaches your desired level of “done.” (I like the cabbage to be softened, but not mushy. This takes 3-4 minutes.)
-
Serve as is, over rice noodles, or with fried rice. Enjoy!
